Food

Food

Food is important to us. We ourselves are real foodies and we tranfer our own love of food when it comes to providing food for our guests. Apart from breakfast, we also offer a range of options for your evening meal.

Normandy produce

Normandy is a land of dairy produce, cream, butter, creme cru and milk, of apples, Cider, Calvados, Calva, Normandie tarte, of seafood, mussels, bulots, oysters, wonderful patés and charcuterie.  We have four regional cheeses, Camembert, Livarot, Pont L'Eveque and Neuvchatel. We attempt to use many of our local ingredients in our cookery. For breakfast, all our jams are homemade, often using the apples, blackberries and other fruits produced in the meadow, we also make our own yoghurt from Normandy milk and a local yoghurt culture. For dinner amongst other things, we produce Normandy chicken, a Normandy pork stew, a Normandy style tartiflette using apples and Andouille sausage and a seafood stew made with cream and cider.

Local restaurants

We have some excellent local restaurants, but here are a few tips and suggestions.

We are a rural area and so restaurants don't tend to open very late as they might in some cities. We would suggest that you arrive no later than 9pm.

It is best to phone and book in advance to be sure of a table, especially on the coast in the summer and make it clear if you want a table outside. Many coastal restaurants are closed out of season.

Some of the best restaurants are small basic restaurants with a fixed lunchtime menu. The food and service is usually excellent and a fixed menu will usually be around 13€ - 15€ for three courses, with two to three choices per course, sometimes this even includes cider or wine. Get there 12-12.30pm as 1pm might be too late - the restaurants get very busy with locals. These are often not smart restaurants but they are very good value and the food is usually very good.

Many restaurants do not open in the evening except at the weekend.

We have cards/details of local restaurants which we have tried or which have been recommended by previous guests on our information shelf in the entrance hall and we can give suggestions for vegatarian restaurants etc. We are happy to phone and book for you in advance as long as you honour the booking.

Four course dinner (20€ per person)

Our table d'hotes four course dinner starts off with our home made aperatif - a Bicyclette Bleue and nibbles. An entree, a main course, a cheese board, dessert and fresh coffee (or equivilent). In the summer, this is usually served in our open stable area, but if the weather is not so good it is served in the entrance hall. We can serve this dinner on the night of your arrival, Sundays, Mondays and bank holidays. It must be booked 24 hours in advance as it is freshly cooked to order (48 hours for a Sunday or bank holiday) and we can provide dinner for up to six guests. It is traditionally eaten with your hosts which allows us to provide alcohol. If you prefer to eat alone, this is perfectly possible but we cannot supply alcohol.

Picnic dinner (25€ for two people)

We can provide a demi baguette and paté and then a choice of Home made quiche Lorraine, Normandy Tart, onion tart or cheese, Lardon and potato pasties, salad,  crisps, two apples and two shandies – in a basket with plates, cutlery and knapkins and a rug to sit on if you need it.
